Two teenage sisters won a $20,000 prize in a national contest Wednesday for their herbal
anti-flea concoction for cats and dogs.
Julia and Caroline LaRoche's Flea Tea took first place in the contest for high school inventors, sponsored
by the Electronic Retailers Association, Future Business Leaders of America and Koeppel Direct, a leading
direct response media-buying company.
Julia, 18, and Caroline, 16, set out to find a gentler anti-flea product than commercial shampoos.
The mixture of sea salt and herbs left the family's dog and cat flea-free, they said. The sisters
plan to market the remedy in large paper tea bags that can be steeped in warm water for a
pet's bath.
Flea Tea defeated second-place winner Butter Blaster, a tube that evenly distributes butter through a
tub of popcorn, and third-place Floating Game Table, a floating table with built-in drink holders
and chip tray for playing games in the pool. The fourth-place invention was a computer interface
system that uses gloves to allow a user to operate a computer by gesturing, without touching the
keyboard or mouse.
The sisters' other entry, the Doggy Den/Kitty Cave, was one of two runners-up. It looks like a
landscape rock with a door and a heated floor to keep outdoor pets comfortable in all
weather.
All submissions for the contest have secured or pending patents.
